The SEED Classroom would expand the Black Hill Regional Park Nature Programs. The current program serves the needs of a growing adjacent community. SEED stands for Sustainable Education Every Day. A SEED Classroom is an environmentally responsible structure that serves as a unique educational tool as a living laboratory for teachers and students. It houses the systems that the classroom needs to be self-sustaining. Materials and systems are designed exposed to teach students how the building works. It is designed to promote STEM education for the preschoolers and students.
The project will be located half a mile north of the Black Hill Visitor Center at the abandoned maintenance yard, which will be repurposed to an environmentally friendly site. There are two parts of the project. Part one is the program area associated with the SEED Classroom programs including parking and drop-off area, interpretive SWM facilities, relocated greenhouse, SEED Classroom, outdoor gathering space, natural play, garden plots, etc. This area will be all located in the existing fenced area by removing unnecessary asphalt. New entrance plaza, fence, and gates will be created at the entrance. The second part is outside of the existing fenced area where the gravel parking lot and old maintenance storage bins located. The greenhouse is also located in this area and will be relocated to the program area. This entire area will be re-naturalized with meadow and forest to be blend into the surrounding natural setting.
The Facility Plan was shared with the public during a Community Meeting held on April 2nd, 2019 at the Black Hill Visitor Center. A few residents and members of Friends of Black Hill Nature Program (FOBHNP) attended the meeting. They provided thoughtful suggestions and showed support to the proposed program. The meeting minutes and comments are shared in the project webpage along with the PowerPoint presentation. We also developed this on-line comment web page so people who were not able to attend the community meeting have a chance to review the plan and share your thoughts.
