What do you think about vacuum-truck leaf collection?
We would like your input on leaf collection – could you please take the short survey below? Your input will guide the Davidson Board of Commissioners’ decision process for the FY 2016-2017 budget.
At their March 8 meeting, the Davidson Mayor and Commissioners discussed the possibility of offering vacuum truck leaf collection service to residential single-family homes within Town of Davidson limits. We offered this service to citizens until mid-2010, when our vacuum leaf collection truck became obsolete and the cost of a new truck and employees to drive the truck and manage the service was too high. At that point, we adopted the current system: citizens bag their leaves and set them out for Republic Waste Services to collect alongside their trash and recycling carts. A new type of vacuum leaf collection truck is now available that requires only one employee to collect the leaves. (image: example of leaf collection vacuum truck)
If we were to offer vacuum leaf pick-up service again, there are several options related to frequency and duration that would affect the solid waste fee for those who currently pay it:
- Pick-up bi-weekly for 16 weeks starting in October for approx. $18.25/household/year
- Pick-up bi-weekly for 12 weeks starting in October for approx. $17.25/household/year
- Pick-up weekly for 16 weeks starting in October for approx. $34.16/household/year
- Pick-up weekly for 12 weeks starting in October for approx. $32.16/household/year
There would be no specific day for pick-up; the truck would make its way through town, vacuuming leaf piles. Citizens could still bag leaves in addition to participating in vacuum pick-up.
