The City is seeking input from Palm Desert residents on Desert Willow Golf Resort and the resident discount card.
The City of Palm Desert values input from residents regarding all City amenities and we hope you will participate in this survey to share your thoughts about Desert Willow Golf Resort.
When it was conceived by City leaders more than 20 years ago, Desert Willow Golf Resort was intended to serve two purposes:
- create an economic generator for the City of Palm Desert, stimulating resort development that would boost tourism, create local jobs and produce revenues to fund vital City services;
- provide residents with a self-supporting recreational amenity that would offer a country club experience at a more affordable price.
To date, Desert Willow has been successful in achieving both of these goals.
The Coachella Valley has a number of municipal courses that provide high quality golf experiences to visitors and to residents at a discounted rate. Desert Willow has distinguished itself from some of these other courses by operating without being a burden on the City’s general fund, taking money away from needed core services.
It costs Desert Willow, and by extension the City, approximately $79 to provide a round of golf at Desert Willow. The resident rate currently stands at $50 a round.
This means that Coachella Valley visitors and other Desert Willow golfers who pay higher green fees of up to $185 per round are subsidizing resident play. These higher green fees help ensure that Palm Desert’s resident golfers can continue to play Desert Willow at a significantly reduced rate and that all residents, including thousands of non-golfers, are not picking up the tab for the residents who play at Desert Willow.
