How should the City address employee and commercial parking on residential streets surrounding the Downtown area?
Merchant parking permits are available for purchase on a monthly and semi-annual basis for employees to park in several public parking lots. The City oversubscribes the permits at a ratio of about 2.5 permits for every 1 space. Often merchant or public parking demand exceeds the parking supply, and downtown parking overflows onto the adjacent residential streets surrounding Downtown.
To address merchant parking on residential streets, the City approved a resident parking permit program in 2008. The program allows residents on certain streets to petition for 2-Hour Parking restrictions except by permit. Residents on those streets can purchase permits to override the 2-hour limit. The current policy only allows residents living on the posted streets to obtain permits, whereas other residents on unposted streets are not. As a consequence, residents without permits are having more difficulty finding public parking near their homes. The City is currently reviewing its permit policies and wishes to hear public comments and suggestions to change the current policy.
