On October 24, 2017, the City Council will be considering regulations that, if adopted, would require businsses (e.g. restaurants) in the City to provide single-use straws to customers only when a straw is requested by that customer, rather than automatically placing single-use straws in all drinks. Please see below for additional information and please provide your feedback below. A staff report will be available on the City’s website one week before the City Council meeting.
Background. At a City Council hearing in June of this year, the City Council provided direction for staff to prepare regulations that would require businesses in the City to provide single-use straws to customers only when said straw is requested, rather than delivering the drink with a single-use straw included by default. This is coming forward in an effort to reduce waste by giving the customer the choice to forego a straw. In San Luis Obispo County ~400,000 straws are used every day and none of these straws are recycled in San Luis Obispo County.
Does this affect me/my business? The regulations, if approved, would affect businesses such as restaurants that use single-use straws in their beverages. The regulations will likely include exemptions for specific circumstances.
