The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is in the process of redesigning the intersections at West Main Road/East Main Road (2 Mile Corner) and West Main Road/Coddington Highway. There are two proposed designs:
- Construction of a roundabout at each location, or
- Reconstruction and improvement of the existing signalized intersections that presently exist.
Both options manage traffic volumes through the year 2030 with similar improved levels of performance. Presentations from RIDOT have indicated that roundabouts also offer significant reductions in the number and severity of crashes, improved safety for all transportation modes, and better traffic flow. Roundabouts also offer opportunities for aesthetic improvements through the traffic corridor.
The Town Council has been asked to consider these two options and advise RIDOT of which option the community desires.
